A 10-session therapeutic programme

DRUMBEAT stands for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes & Thoughts.

DRUMBEAT is a flexible interactive programme that combines learning music with cognitive behavioural therapy and engages people of all ability levels.

DRUMBEAT uses rhythm to help reach people who are at risk of problematic health and social outcomes.

It teaches values that the students can transfer from the sessions into their everyday lives.

Key learning areas

  • Rhythms of life - behaviours, relationships, responsibility and how to deal with conflict.
  • Relationships - Open honest communication, healthy values, dealing with peer pressure, maintaining positive relationships
  • Harmony - how to work with others, supporting each other, positive attitudes, how to create social harmony
  • Identity - How to know and trust yourself, understanding individuality, listening skills, developing trust
  • Emotions and feelings - how to interpret feelings, healthy expression, acknowledgement of different feelings, living harmoniously
  • Teamwork - concentration, perseverance, commitment, skill ranges, communication, supporting each other.

Other outcomes from these sessions

  • How to deal with bullying, asking for help, healthy approaches towards negative behaviour and peer support.
  • Increased teamwork and co-operation in both school and social activities.
  • Increased musical ability such as holding a rhythm, expressiveness, confidence when performing and self-discipline.
  • Improved understanding of emotions and ways in which to express their own emotions in ways that enhance relationships.
  • Increased feeling of connection with friends and groups.
  • Increased general life skills and the ability to self-manage behaviour.
  • Recognition of the need for boundaries and how to form trusting relationships.
  • Increased levels of commitment and perseverance towards group and individual goals.
  • Increased ability to recognise the difference between health and unhealthy relationships and understanding acceptable means of self-expression.

At the end of the sessions the service users will be able to do a performance for others which is fantastic for self-esteem.
